The Orthodox Church played an important role in liberating Greece from Turkish occupation. Set amid the rural foothills of Psiloritis (Mount Idi), 23 kilometers southeast of Réthymnon, this fortress-like 16th-century monastery is surrounded by high stone walls. Today, it&#8217;s a wonderfully peaceful place, with a delightful Baroque church and a rose garden, but it has not always been so. In 1866, the monastery became the central meeting place for Cretan revolutionaries, with the Abbot as chairman. During an uprising against the Turks, some 900 locals (mainly women and children), who had taken refuge here, chose to blow themselves up rather than surrender. Outside the monastery, their skulls are displayed in glass cabinets, as a haunting monument to their bravery.

While the coast is very hot and crowded during summer, a short drive into the mountains brings you to peaceful rural villages where time has stopped. Lying 27 kilometers southwest of Réthymnon, Argyroupoli is especially cool and fresh due to countless small waterfalls rising from underground springs. Nestled amid lush greenery and trees, Argyroupoli has a rich history dating back to Roman times &#8211; it was also much loved by the Venetians, and later became the center of Cretan resistance against the Turks. Today, it is particularly known for its excellent tavernas specialising in roast lamb, with open air dining on stone terraces under the trees and close to the waterfalls.

The Archaeological Museum of Chania is located in the old city center, in Halidon Street. It is housed in the Venetian church, dedicated to St. Francis, the Saint of the Franciscan monks, a very important monument of the city. 
The collection is divided into two parts: In the eastern part of the building, you will see findings from the Neolithic Age up to Late Minoan period, while in the west side, there are findings from the Geometric period up to Roman times. 
Pottery, lapidary, seal engraving, sculpture, metallurgy, gold jewelry and coins are presented in chronological order. Very interesting are, also, the mosaic floors of the Roman period (second-third century AD), presenting scenes from the Dionysian cycle and episodes of the myth of Poseidon and the nymph Amymone.

One of the most amazing places I have visited, up in the mountains in a very tradianal village. The views of the land and sea are spectacular, very peaceful just listening to the goats in the valley. With one tervena In the village, Maria's, that serves fresh Cretan dishes you don't need to move very far, a wonderfully relaxing stay.

We found this place by pure chance on a very last minute booking (less than twenty four hours). So happy that we stayed there! Our flight was very delayed so we didn't arrive until nearly 2am but the owner was very welcoming and made us feel very at home and happy....

Whenever I try to remember my last truly relaxing holidays, though on the meantime I have been to many other places, there is only Kastellos in my mind..

My boyfriend and I stayed at Kastellos village for 4 nights and we only wish we stayed here much longer. The atmosphere, the views, the noises coming from the nature- everything combined was what we needed to relax in its true sense and forget about the rest of the world for those few days...
