Semi-mountainous village built on the feet of the White Mountains on an altitude of 252m. Its named derived from the site it was built (like a castle). Originally the village was situated lower on the valley in the present area of the settlement Agathes from where the inhabitants were forced to leave in 1800 due to the Ottomans. Close to the village a there was in 1835 a severe battle amongst Cretans and Ottomans that left 22 dead Ottomans and just 1 Cretan. It was the reason that the ottomans stopped raiding the area. The locals had an important contribution to the resistance against the Germans fascists during the 2sn World War.

GEORGIOPOLIS

Georgioupolis, one of the most tourist destinations in Crete, Is situated on the northwest coast of the island, in the Almyros bay, between the cities of Chania and Rethymno. A group of villages built on the slopes of the White Mountains, on the Almyros river estuary and the shore that runs along the bay, amongst vineyards, olive groves and forests. The visitor here finds concentrated all the landscape features that give character to the island: the mountain and the plain, the river, the lake and the sea, wild nature and cultivated land. Landscapes of incomparable beauty, villages conserving the traditional Cretan element, but also residential zones of cosmopolitan atmosphere, nightlife, luxurious hotels with high-class services, and the ability of easy access to every place to the west of the island through the highway that links its major cities. Every summer, in Georgioupolis all the locals are devoted to provide services to the visitors: the famous Cretan hospitality finds here its true meaning. This is only one of the many reasons where thousands of visitors worldwide, return here full of nostalgia. Because the first word hospitality means to us, is the word Friendship.

Favoured by Nature,   blessed by God, are some of the usual comments when we refer to Apokoronas County, part of which is Georgioupolis. From the imposing tops of the White Mountains, which we gaze from our balconies, spring the rivers that provide water to Western Crete. Georgioupolis stands on the way of one of the richest water tables of the isle of Crete. Due to this fact the area owes the explicit natural environment, the wide diversity and rareness of flora and fauna. Georgioupolis is run through by rivers, these rivers create wetlands amongst its hilltops the only natural lake of Crete is formed, the most southern lake of Europe, Koruna’s lake and along the bay, stretches one of the longest beaches on the island, 6 km long. A great variety of landscapes, suitable for daily walks and tours. Many of these landscapes are protected ecotypes proposed for the European Environmental Network "NATURA 2000".

The 6 km long Georgioupolis beach, which extends to the neighbouring Prefecture of Rethymno, attracts thousands of visitors, both Creek people and foreigners, who enjoy its golden sand. An organized beach with lifeguards, toilets, cleaning services as well as water sport facilities. A beach full of colours and pleasant challenges: in the morning   people enjoy the warm Mediterranean sun, in the afternoon lonely couples or companies gaze the colours of the calm sea melting into the horizon. At night youngsters dance in the numerous beach bars while elder people relax in the verandas of the shore's hotels.

The valley used to be first in the production of pistachio for many years. This production has been abandoned and nowadays the valley is covered mainly with olive groves for the production of olive oil. In a lesser extend there are orchards and avocado trees. The rest of the valley is covered with vineyards for the production of grapes and wine, vegetables and seasonal cultivations (watermelons). Sheep and goat breeding provides the most of the mountainous villages income through the production of milk, dairy products and meat. The village of Georgioupolis hosts one of the 6 fish ports of Chania' Prefecture in which dozens of fishing boats find refuge. During summer a considerable percentage of the population works in the tourist industry. The municipality of Georgioupolis is the administrative form of the area and its employees' work for the prosperity of the area and the provision of services to the citizens. The potential cultural activities in the area are amongst the active cultural groups, the primary schools, the sports clubs and the parishes. All kinds of market places, hotels, restaurants, rural partnerships, and offices providing services are the centers of the economic activities of the citizens.

KOURNAS LAKE

The lake is situated just 2, 5 km from the sea, amongst the hilltops. It is created by the obstruction of underground water from the impermeable rock and the flooding of the existing cavity. The depth of the lake reaches 22 m and the water level changes depending of the season: in winter it lowers while the summer with the melt of snow from the White Mountains it rises. The lake is referred from ancient years with the name of Korisia.

It is also believed that an ancient temple dedicated to the ancient goddess Athena existed somewhere on the lakeshore. However the raiding Arabs in middle Ages gave the lake its present name "Kournas", which means lake. The dark colour of the lake caused by the reflections of the high mountains, it seemed to have created a sense of fear to the locals so that a legend was created.

The legend says about a small village being in the place of the lake. Once a villager took his young and beautiful daughter to help him in the fields. Halfway they sat to rest and the daughter started to comb her hair with grace. The father was staring proudly at his daughter, however suddenly he felt an erotic desire for her. The girl desperately screamed and wished the place to flood. Instantly the place was flooded creating a lake. Even nowadays, a local myth says that moonstrucks used to see, from time to time, a fairy combing her golden hair in the lake.
